On Friday, Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang pushed back against growing calls to slow artificial intelligence development, arguing that companies should move quickly while ensuring their products are safe before release.
Jensen Huang Defends Rapid AI Development
In a teaser video shared by CBS News, Huang told correspondent Jo Ling Kent that the AI industry should continue advancing at full speed. “We should go as fast as we can, irrespective of anybody else.”
Huang noted that “we are going to go as fast we can, but” that does not mean releasing unsafe technology. He said companies should avoid shipping products before they are ready or “unsafe.”
The Nvidia CEO also framed rapid AI progress as important to U.S. economic growth, saying companies are expected to help make the country “as prosperous as possible.”
The full interview will be released on Sunday.
Anthropic CEO Calls for AI Slowdown
Huang’s comments come as concerns over AI’s rapid development intensify.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has argued that the technology is advancing at an “exponential” rate and warned that safety measures need to keep pace. He said the industry should slow down rather than stop developing AI altogether.
Amodei has also called for independent third-party evaluators to assess AI companies’ safety practices and urged companies to work together on common safety standards.
Earlier, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon raised concerns that AI companies are prioritizing rapid innovation over adequate security measures, saying stronger safeguards are needed as the technology becomes more capable.
Earlier this week, Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company delayed its Muse AI agent for several months to address safety and security concerns. “Every lab has the responsibility and incentive to move at the pace required to train its models safely, and the ability to take its own actions to ensure that happens,” Zuckerberg wrote on X.
