Anthropic is reportedly weighing a new AI model to counter OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra as the company faces mounting competitive pressure ahead of a potential IPO, even as its CEO urges the industry to slow AI development.
Anthropic Weighs New AI Model
Anthropic is thinking of launching a new AI model as GPT-6 Astra gains traction with businesses and developers, Reuters reported Friday, citing three sources.
The company is also evaluating the safety of its next model and how much to invest in new releases as it works to improve profitability, according to the report.
The deliberations come shortly after CEO Dario Amodei called for a slower pace of AI development over safety concerns.
Anthropic did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.
GPT-6 Astra Gains Enterprise Traction
OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra this month with improvements in computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity, and professional tasks.
Astra accounted for about 13% of enterprise AI spending tracked by Ramp, compared with 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable.
OpenRouter also said users spent more on OpenAI models than Anthropic models last week, marking the first such lead in more than two years.
Anthropic Still Holds Revenue Lead
Despite the pressure, Anthropic’s annualized revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion by July, compared with more than $40 billion for OpenAI.
Anthropic is also projecting 2028 revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion.
Anthropic is reportedly eyeing an October Nasdaq listing, which could make the AI company eligible for inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 Index.
The IPO could value Anthropic at $2 trillion or more, potentially exceeding the $1.75 trillion valuation of Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) following its Nasdaq listing in June.
