On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Outlook Therapeutics Inc.’s (NASDAQ:OTLK) ONS-5010/LYTENAVA (bevacizumab-vikg, bevacizumab gamma) for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), commonly known as wet AMD.

The regulatory milestone distinguishes LYTENAVA as the inaugural and sole FDA-approved ophthalmic formulation of bevacizumab designed specifically for wet AMD treatment within the United States.

The approval comes after the drug has received three FDA rejections.

Setting New Standard in Retina Care

For the first time, retina specialists and patients have an FDA-backed bevacizumab option tailored exclusively for ocular use.

Consequently, the biopharmaceutical firm anticipates securing 12 years of Reference Product Exclusivity under the Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act.

LYTENAVA is strategically positioned to become the premier FDA-approved bevacizumab therapy for wet AMD. Presently, bevacizumab constitutes the bulk of initial anti-VEGF treatments for the disease, highlighting its critical function in retinal health.

“For more than two decades, bevacizumab has served as one of the most widely utilized anti-VEGF therapies in retina care despite the absence of an FDA-approved ophthalmic formulation. LYTENAVA fundamentally changes that landscape,” said Bob Jahr, CEO of Outlook Therapeutics.

“Rather than relying on repackaged formulations originally intended for intravenous use, physicians now have access to a purpose-built ophthalmic formulation of bevacizumab designed specifically for intravitreal administration that delivers the manufacturing consistency, product quality, and regulatory oversight patients deserve,” Jahr further commented.

Entering Multibillion-Dollar Market

Wet AMD remains a persistent, advancing disease and a primary driver of severe vision impairment among older demographics globally. Because patients frequently require sustained therapies over many years, consistent manufacturing and product reliability are vital.

LYTENAVA is stepping into a highly lucrative ophthalmology sector. The domestic anti-VEGF retina market generates roughly $8.5 billion annually, involving millions of intravitreal injections every year.

Following the approval, the enterprise is initiating its commercial rollout. Operations will focus on broadening patient access, enhancing reimbursement strategies, and building a specialized commercial retina team.

Eligible patients nationwide are expected to have access to LYTENAVA before the close of the year.

OTLK Price Action: Outlook Therapeutics shares were down 9.60% at $1.27 at the time of publication on Monday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
