Artiva Biotherapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:ARTV) announced it will halt further clinical development of its lead cell therapy candidate, slash roughly 94% of its workforce, and evaluate strategic alternatives.

The clinical-stage biotechnology company decided on its cell therapy candidate, AlloNK (AB-101), following an extensive risk-benefit assessment.

While the non-genetically modified, allogeneic NK cell therapy demonstrated deep B-cell depletion alongside rituximab in autoimmune trials, extended patient follow-up failed to show the lasting efficacy required to sustain the clinical program.

Safety Complications Prompt Program Discontinuation

Severe patient safety incidents heavily influenced the termination. In a Phase 2a basket study evaluating patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other B-cell-driven autoimmune conditions, one participant suffered a fatal neurological condition known as leukoencephalopathy.

Investigators and an independent safety review board linked the death directly to fludarabine-related neurotoxicity resulting from the protocol-mandated lymphodepletion regimen.

Following notification of the fatality, the Food and Drug Administration asked Artiva to halt enrollment and dosing across the Phase 2a study.

Consequently, the company also halted its planned Phase 3 pivotal trial.

A second participant experienced sudden death roughly two months after starting study treatment, though investigators determined that incident was unrelated to AlloNK or the broader study regimen.

Because cell therapy developers widely utilize fludarabine-containing conditioning regimens, Artiva plans to publish the clinical details of the neurotoxicity case in a scientific publication.

Massive Workforce Reduction And Strategic Review

To protect remaining capital while reviewing alternatives, Artiva will dismiss roughly 94% of its workforce. The company hired Leerink Partners as its financial advisor.

Artiva canceled its investor webcast scheduled for November 9, and withdrew planned clinical presentations from the ACR Convergence 2026 conference.

The company reported approximately $319.1 million in preliminary, unaudited cash, cash equivalents, and investments as of September 30.

ARTV Price Action: Artiva Biotherapeutics shares were down 30.93% at $4.21 at the time of publication on Tuesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
