Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) backers got real policy wins from President Donald Trump, including a landmark stablecoin law, but his own financial ties now threaten the legislation the industry still needs.

Trump courted the industry hard on the campaign trail, pledging at Nashville’s 2024 Bitcoin conference to make America the “crypto capital of the planet” and promising to remove SEC Chair Gary Gensler, who later announced his departure effective January 20, 2025.

Markets responded immediately: Bitcoin crossed $100,000 by early December and touched roughly $109,000 just before inauguration, a gain of about 44.6% from election night’s high.

What Trump’s Administration Actually Delivered

  • GENIUS Act signed into law (July 2025), establishing a federal framework for payment stablecoins
  • SEC dropped its Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) case (February 2025) and rescinded SAB 121 custody accounting guidance
  • Strategic Bitcoin Reserve established (March 2025) via executive order, capitalized initially with forfeited Bitcoin
  • DeFi broker rule overturned (April 2025), reversing an IRS reporting requirement
  • Banking access eased through OCC guidance letting national banks engage with crypto more freely
  • SEC approved simpler listing standards for qualifying crypto investment funds (September 2025), making new products easier to bring to market.

Why the CLARITY Act Exposes the Limits of His Support

The Senate’s procedural vote to advance the CLARITY Act fell short 49-50 on Sept. 15, leaving the bill stalled rather than dead.

Paradigm senior adviser Justin Slaughter told Bloomberg, as Benzinga reported, that “the failure of Clarity begins and ends with Donald Trump.”

Even Trump-aligned investor Nic Carter criticized the president’s family business interests for complicating negotiations.

The dispute split along familiar lines:

  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.): argued the bill didn’t adequately prevent presidential self-dealing
  • Sens. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.): said the revised bill had incorporated most of a bipartisan ethics proposal already

Trump’s own crypto ventures, including a memecoin launched days before his inauguration and his family’s stake in World Liberty Financial (CRYPTO: WLFI), gave Democrats a concrete target to point to throughout the fight.

Other Costs Tied to Trump’s Involvement

Benzinga reported that roughly 989,000 TRUMP token wallets sat underwater, with estimated losses near $3.81 billion.

Meanwhile, Trump’s October 2025 China tariff threat triggered a selloff with roughly $19 billion in leveraged liquidations across crypto.

He also pardoned Binance founder Changpeng Zhao in October 2025, following Zhao’s conviction for failing to maintain anti-money-laundering controls.

What the Midterms Could Change

Reuters reported October 13 that Democrats are preparing investigations into Trump-family crypto and prediction-market ties if they retake either chamber.

A Democratic win wouldn’t repeal GENIUS or dissolve the Bitcoin reserve, since those gains came through law and executive order rather than anything Congress alone controls.

But it would hand Democrats subpoena power and committee leverage, making any future CLARITY-style bill even harder to pass without addressing the ethics concerns that sank it this time.
