A Canada trade deal could have been salvaged with a return to the original terms, SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci said, but he argues President Donald Trump no longer cares.
The Canada Deal Was Easy to Save
In a post on X, Scaramucci said the U.S. and Canada struck a deal about six weeks ago and that Trump himself tweeted about it.
The terms were then switched “at the last minute,” and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney “pulled out.”
The dispute began with 50% tariffs Washington imposed on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, and the U.S.-Canada talks later collapsed, with Ottawa announcing retaliatory measures.
The two sides “could have gone back to the original deal easily,” Scaramucci added, which “would have helped every northern border race.”
Trump “doesn’t care,” the former White House communications director, who served for just 11 days in 2017, added.
Trump Dismissed Iran War Concerns
Scaramucci described a president in “full-on nihilism mode,” citing political commentator Tucker Carlson, who he said told Trump about the war situation and got the response, “I don’t care.”
Carlson told NPR in September that he broke with Trump over the Iran war, recounting a meeting in which Trump dismissed his concerns by saying, “we’ll all die anyway.”
On Monday, Scaramucci also said Trump dismissed Iran’s Mosaic Defense Doctrine, a decentralized military strategy built to keep fighting if leaders are killed, when his own intelligence team presented it.
Trump Won’t Help Fellow Republicans
Scaramucci pointed to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate nominee in Texas, who told donors and lobbyists at a private Washington fundraiser last month that Trump’s midterm convention in Dallas dropped his numbers, according to a recording obtained by The New York Times.
Trump won’t help Vice President JD Vance either, he said, because the president may think Vance could take some credit for his greatness.
“You may think he’s terrible. He thinks he’s greater than George Washington,” Scaramucci added.
