Kinross Gold Corporation (NYSE:KGC) shares are trading lower Thursday afternoon as cuts to its gold production guidance for 2026 and 2027, a Scotiabank price target reduction and broader precious metals sector weakness overshadowed management’s decision to increase shareholder cash returns.

Analyst Target Revision and Payout Expansion
The selling pressure follows a research note published Thursday morning by Scotiabank analyst Tanya Jakusconek, who lowered her price target on the senior gold producer from $41 to $39 while maintaining a Sector Outperform rating. The target adjustment reflects model revisions following Kinross’s operational and capital return update released Wednesday.
While management adjusted near-term mine site production pacing and cost assumptions across select operating units, the enterprise attempted to cushion the outlook by raising its 2026 shareholder return target to 50% of attributable free cash flow, up from its previous 40% commitment.
Scotiabank noted that while Kinross’s long-term asset quality and cash generation remain robust, near-term cost inflation and operational pacing adjustments temper immediate valuation upside.
Production Forecast Cuts at La Coipa and Round Mountain
The primary catalyst for the broader market pressure was Kinross revising its full-year 2026 and 2027 attributable production downward to roughly 1.84 million to 1.86 million gold equivalent ounces per year.
This represents an approximate 8% reduction from the midpoint of its previous guidance range of 1.9 million to 2.1 million ounces. Consequently, the company raised its 2026 all-in sustaining costs estimate to between $1,850 and $1,900 per ounce sold, up significantly from its prior target of $1,730 per ounce.
Management attributed these downward revisions to acute operational challenges concentrated at two key production sites. At La Coipa in Chile, unprecedented winter weather severely disrupted mining and milling operations throughout the third quarter, while unexpected metallurgical issues involving higher copper grades in sulphide ore further depressed gold recovery rates.
Meanwhile, at Round Mountain in Nevada, lower mining rates, grades and recoveries at the Phase S pit deferred the processing of higher-grade ore into future periods. Although Kinross emphasized that its tier-one assets like Paracatu and Tasiast continue to perform within expectations, the reduced production targets and elevated cost outlook ultimately dictated market sentiment.
