Microsoft Corp.‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella said Xi Jinping’s China should also care about AI safety, weighing in on the broader discussion of AI’s impact on humans and the industry.
Nadella Mulls China’s Role in AI Safety
“China should also deeply care about the same safety concerns if the U.S. cares about them,” said Nadella on the All In Podcast. The CEO noted that it won’t be different for China, “as if they won’t have the same hacking problem,” and that they too want their citizens to benefit from AI just like we do.
Nadella also said that there is a possibility of “international norms” around AI if we are sure about what the risk is, and why the risk is “idiosyncratic” that the only people who are worried about it are Americans. “It doesn’t make sense, right?” He added.
“The Chinese should care,” said Nadella, adding that the Asian nation is a superpower.
Industry Leaders Weigh on AI Risk
On Tuesday, Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company delayed its Muse AI agent for several months to address safety and security concerns. However, he noted that every AI lab has the “responsibility and incentive to move at the pace required to train its models safely,” and the ability to take actions to make sure that happens.
Last week, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a global slowdown, raising concerns about the risks associated with increasingly powerful systems. Amodei’s comments saw support from rivals such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Space Exploration Technologies Corp (NASDAQ: SPCX) CEO Elon Musk, as well as Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis.
Nadella also weighed in, saying we should do what it takes to “build stuff that serves humanity” and is in control of humans. However, he noted that the “broad diffusion” of AI is the most critical thing and that let it “reach humanity in ways that it serves humanity.”
