Cryptocurrency bettors sharply raised odds on Wednesday that the U.S will pass an AI Safety Bill this year following OpenAI’s call for mandatory national standards.

What Polymarket Traders Think

Polygon (CRYPTO: POL)-based Polymarket currently assigns a 20% probability to this outcome, up from 11% the day before. The odds reached an all-time high of 58% in May, but have since cratered significantly.

The market resolves to Yes if, before Dec. 31, a federal law is signed that has at least one of the following provisions: a ban on the creation or release of specific AI models, limits on how AI systems may be trained and usage restrictions on AI systems.

OpenAI Pushes for Regulatory Oversight

The odds spiked after OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane said the company wants to collaborate with Congress on “mandatory, capability-based national AI safety rules.”

“As capabilities grow, confidence in safety must increasingly set the pace of AI progress,” Lehane said. “Safety does not stand in the way of progress; it is what allows progress to go further and benefit more people.”

OpenAI also supported state-level AI safety legislation, including the California bills signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Rogue AI incidents have surged lately, with OpenAI admitting its agents used wiki websites as improvised communication channels and engaged in unintended behavior during testing.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said earlier this week that the technology industry’s growing political spending against candidates who favor tougher AI rules is weakening public support for stronger oversight.
