The Securities and Exchange Commission called off a planned Friday meeting on cryptocurrency regulations. Concurrently, reports have emerged that the White House is considering a meeting with officials from the cryptocurrency and prediction market industries.
Key Meeting Canceled
The meeting was intended to evaluate a proposal for creating a “tailored offering regime” for certain investment contracts involving cryptocurrency assets.
The meeting was moved due to an “unforeseen scheduling issue,” Reuters reported, citing an SEC spokesperson.
Benzinga reached out to the agency seeking further information about the development and what comes next.
Tokenization Plan on Hold?
The agency was also said to be preparing to release its “innovation exemption” for trading tokenized stocks on Friday.
However, journalist Eleanor Terrett reported that the plan has been “further delayed,” with details still expected to remain under wraps for now.
The “innovation exemption” proposal aims to give qualified firms a regulatory sandbox, a limited window to issue and trade tokenized securities on-chain under lighter-touch compliance conditions, while still operating under SEC oversight.
Trump to Meet Crypto Executives?
In other news, the White House is planning a gathering next Wednesday for officials from the cryptocurrency and prediction market industries, Politico reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The specifics of the event are yet to be finalized, and it is uncertain who will participate or if President Donald Trump will be in attendance, the report said.
The White House didn’t immediately return Benzinga’s request for comment.
These developments come as the CLARITY Act, seen as one of the most important bills to regulate the cryptocurrency industry, stalled in Congress. The Senate did not take a vote before its August recess, delaying the next potential opportunity until September.
