Approval ratings for President Donald Trump are near record lows, with the continuation of the Middle East conflict in Iran and subsequent high gas prices failing to win over voters.
YouGov Poll
A new Economist/YouGov poll finds that most voters believe going to war with Iran was the wrong decision, which weighed on the overall approval rating for Trump.
Trump’s approval rating in the poll stood at 37%, with a disapproval rating of 59%. The remaining 4% said they were unsure.
The poll finds that 57% of voters say the war was the wrong decision, while 27% support the war. The remaining 16% of voters said they were not sure.
Back in April, these figures stood at 30% supporting the war and 51% saying it was the wrong decision, meaning the support for the war has declined in recent months.
The poll also finds that most Americans think the war could continue for some time. The new poll found that 46% said the war in Iran will last another year or more, versus 26% in April.
The war, lasting between a month and a year longer, was also 46%, down from 53% back in April.
The war lasting a month or less was chosen by only 8% of respondents, down from 21% in April.
War Support Hurting Approval Rating
The Economist/YouGov poll comes the same week as a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
That poll found that 58% of voters disapprove of the military strikes against Iran.
Both polls find that voters are disapproving of the prolonged attack on Iran.
After talks between the two countries and a ceasefire put in place, the attacks have once again escalated against Iran and could see the war play out longer than expected.
