Michael Saylor, co-founder of Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ: MSTR), once suggested that college degrees would lose significance as the internet and personal computers made high-quality education universally accessible.
Saylor Endorses Online Learning
On the March 10, 2021 FamilyOffice podcast with Angelo Robles, Saylor was asked what advice he would offer to those about to enter college and who are “afraid” about what lies ahead.
“I think the degrees will get less important over time,” he replied.
Saylor added that a ton of content is available on platforms like YouTube and all a student needs is “discipline” and a computer with internet access.
The billionaire said colleges can sometimes “hold you back,” while online videos let you learn on your own schedule.
“I had to show up three lectures a week, sit in the hall with 500 people and listen at their time frame, sitting in the back of the room rows away. So, I wouldn’t obsess over that,” Saylor recalled his college days.
Saylor Stresses Strong Communication Skills
Saylor’s other advice for people facing career uncertainty is to learn coding and move into data science, if they’re pursuing technical disciplines.
For those pursuing a non-technical career, he said strong communication skills matter most.
“The world needs people who are very articulate, who can communicate some useful insight and upload it to the universe,” he added.
From MicroStrategy to Strategy
A graduate of the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Saylor earned dual degrees in aeronautics and astronautics and science, technology, and society.
Later, he launched the business analytics software firm MicroStrategy. He then steered its corporate coffers into Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), rebranding it as “Strategy.”
At the time of writing, Forbes values Saylor’s fortune at $4.6 billion, with most of it tied to his Bitcoin investments.
