Block Inc. (NYSE: XYZ) CEO Jack Dorsey said on Tuesday that the company sees an opportunity for AI agents to handle routine business operations across its Cash App and Square platforms.
AI Agents as the Next Big Thing?
During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, Dorsey said Cash App and Square offer broader banking capabilities, so deploying an agent to help users manage their money makes sense.
“So certainly we’re very interested in that,” he added. “It’s also really important that we recognize use cases that people are doing today and the ones that we think will compound greatly.”
The more immediate opportunity could involve Square merchants, Dorsey said. AI agents might order inventory, purchase ingredients and complete other routine tasks to keep businesses running.
Beyond that, he noted there is an “opportunity” on the consumer side as well.
“It’s still pretty early, but we want to make sure that we have all the primitives and the platform ready,” the Block founder said.
Cash App is a consumer-focused digital wallet and peer-to-peer financial services platform, while Square is a point-of-sale platform built for small and medium-sized merchants.
Block Delivers Double Beat, but Bitcoin Business Disappoints
The company reported adjusted earnings of $1.13 per share, topping the $1.02 analyst estimate by 10.78%. Quarterly revenue came in at $6.72 billion, which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $6.59 billion.
However, the Bitcoin ecosystem’s gross profit fell 50% year over year to $52 million, worsened by a 40% decline in Cash App’s Bitcoin profits.
As of this writing, Block holds 9,117 BTC on its balance sheet, worth $710 million, according to BitcoinTreasuries.net, making it the 14th-largest corporate Bitcoin holder.
Price Action: Block shares rose 5.84% in after-hours trading, according to Benzinga Pro. The stock closed 1.4% lower at $76 during Tuesday’s regular trading session. Year-to-date, the stock has gained 16.76%.
XYZ shows stronger long-term price momentum, though it has underperformed over the short and medium term, according to Benzinga’s Edge Stock Rankings.
