North Korea rejected on Monday U.S. allegations that it stole more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance (CRYPTO: BNB), the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platform.
‘Grave Political Provocation’
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong-Un, described the accusation as “absurd rhetoric,” Reuters reported, citing the North Korean state news agency KCNA.
The FBI said over the weekend that North Korean state-sponsored cybercriminals carried out what is now considered the biggest cryptocurrency theft ever.
Kim Yo Jong said the U.S. is trying to mislead international public opinion, labeling it a “grave political provocation.”
The development comes ahead of President Donald Trump’s Asia trip, during which he has hinted at a potential meeting with Kim Jong-Un.
North Korea’s Crypto Threat
Binance estimated total losses at roughly $6.3 billion, more than four times the amount lost in the largest cryptocurrency theft on record, i.e., the Bybit hack of 2025, which the FBI alleged was also perpetrated by North Korean state actors.
U.S. Secret Service said it’s collaborating with the FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation, DOJ components and U.S. Attorney offices to trace funds across blockchains and pursue recovery.
Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis found that North Korea-linked groups were behind roughly 89% of all reported cryptocurrency hack losses in 2026. In 2025 alone, the group stole assets worth over $2 billion.
