Veteran investor and media personality Kevin O’Leary once observed that people with creative pursuits and diverse interests tend to outperform those who work like robots.

The Eclectic Ones

Appearing on the “The Diary Of A CEO” podcast on June 30, 2025, O’Leary discussed the key attributes he looks for in employees.

“I find the ones that are eclectic people, that have other pursuits that are nothing to do with the business they’re in,” the “Shark” said.

O’Leary noted, for instance, that someone asking for days off to cycle in a desert is the sort of thing that attracts his attention.

“If you look at the year’s outcome from that person, you’re going to find that they probably outperformed,” he added.

Kevin O’Leary Doesn’t Need ‘Robots’

O’Leary, also known as “Mr. Wonderful,” refused to believe that people who work hard in a psychopathic way tend to succeed.

“You want the ones that are not just robots working,” he emphasized, adding that he’d opt for an actual robot in the future once they become available.

The Canadian tycoon said he prefers people with “creative” and “unusual solutions,” and who could think outside of the box.

Best known to American audiences as one of the original investors on the reality television show “Shark Tank,” O’Leary investment profile spans public equities, private equity, venture capital and cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC).

He invested over $8.5 million in 40 companies on the show, with some big wins and some painful losses.

Currently, O’Leary has a net worth of $150 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
