Ouster Stock Rises On Stereolabs ZED Box 2 Launch
Stereolabs, the 3D vision company owned by Ouster, launched a line of onboard computers for robots on Tuesday, called the ZED Box 2 Series. Each box processes camera data and runs AI on the machine itself.
Robot builders face a scaling problem. A single robot can carry many cameras and sensors, and fleets are replacing one-off trials. Processing that flood of data on the robot, known as edge AI, lets a machine react instantly instead of waiting on a distant data center. Teams also prefer one tested package over parts from many suppliers, Stereolabs says.
Two ZED Box 2 Models Target Different Robots
The boxes target autonomous mobile robots, or AMRs, and other machines that must see in three dimensions. Stereolabs offers two versions with identical software and camera ports. They differ in processing power and cooling.
The standard ZED Box 2 uses an Nvidia Jetson Orin NX chip. Its fanless case measures just 55 millimeters tall, so it can hide inside a compact robot while measuring depth and tracking objects.
The ZED Box 2 Max carries Nvidia’s more powerful Jetson Thor chips. That headroom lets a humanoid or other large robot run generative AI and vision-language-action models, which convert camera input into movement, without leaving the machine.
ZED Box 2 Handles Eight Cameras And Robot Sensors
Both models accept eight synchronized cameras, enough for a full circle of vision, plus lidar, motion sensors and motor controllers. They tolerate temperatures from minus 20 to plus 50 degrees Celsius.
Co-founder and CTO Edwin Azzam summed up the pitch: “Robot vision shouldn’t take five suppliers.” He says developers can have dependable all-around perception running within minutes, not weeks.
