Alcoa Corp. (NYSE:AA) stock is trading higher in Friday’s premarket session despite the company reporting mixed third-quarter results.
Management expects production and shipments to increase across its alumina and aluminum segments in the fourth quarter, supported by improved operational stability and productivity.
However, higher market prices and planned maintenance could raise costs, including approximately $30 million in additional aluminum-segment expenses.
Third-Quarter Earnings Snapshot
Alcoa reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.82, beating the consensus estimate of $1.47.
However, revenue of $3.704 billion missed expectations of $3.785 billion and declined sequentially, primarily due to lower metal prices.
Adjusted EBITDA fell to $789 million from $901 million in the previous quarter. Strong operational performance and higher alumina prices partially offset weaker aluminum prices.
The company generated $643 million in operating cash flow and $472 million in free cash flow during the quarter.
Alcoa returned $80 million to shareholders through quarterly dividends during the first nine months of 2026.
The company ended September with $4.4 billion in cash, including $2.6 billion raised through a bond issuance.
Production Rises Despite Lower Aluminum Shipments
Alumina production increased 11% sequentially to 2.5 million metric tons, driven by improved operations at the Pinjarra refinery in Australia. Third-party alumina shipments rose 2%.
Aluminum production increased 2% to 649,000 metric tons, supported by capacity restarts. However, total aluminum shipments declined 5% following unusually high second-quarter volumes.
The Alumina Price Index reached approximately $370 per metric ton as supply tightened outside China. Meanwhile, bauxite prices rose to about $73 per dry metric ton on higher freight costs.
Alumina revenue increased 7% on stronger prices and shipments, while aluminum revenue declined 9% due to lower volumes and realized prices.

Management estimated that the acquisition’s locked-box value exceeded $300 million at quarter-end.

Alcoa expects the remaining proceeds by the end of 2030. The agreement also allows up to seven years for commissioning.
The sale marks the first step toward Alcoa’s goal of generating $500 million to $1 billion through asset sales by 2030.
Fourth-Quarter Outlook and Alumina Market Conditions
During Thursday’s earnings call, Alcoa warned that global aluminum inventories remain historically low at about 42 days of consumption, leaving the market vulnerable to further supply disruptions or unexpected demand increases.
CEO Bill Oplinger said aluminum supplies remain tight, particularly in North America and Europe, where demand exceeds regional production. While smelters in the Middle East are gradually restarting, the timeline for a full recovery remains uncertain.
Alcoa also expects the alumina market to tighten through 2027 as production cuts, project delays and uncertainty surrounding Indonesian supply limit availability.
Meanwhile, smelter restarts in the Middle East and rising aluminum production in Indonesia could support alumina demand. In contrast, China remains well supplied as its domestic refinery capacity continues to expand.
