Anthropic‘s Claude AI chatbot experienced a widespread service disruption Tuesday morning, with service restored within about 40 minutes.
User-reported outages on Downdetector peaked at 10,105 in the U.S. around 10:30 a.m. ET. Anthropic’s status page showed elevated errors across claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and the Claude API starting at about 10:21 a.m. ET. The company said the issue was fully resolved by 10:59 a.m. ET. Users reported failed requests, conversations that wouldn’t load and login problems.
Downdetector also recorded reports from users in other countries over the past 24 hours, including 3,809 in the U.K., 2,283 in Germany, 1,118 in India and 1,095 in Canada.
Anthropic Targets Valuation Above $2 Trillion
The disruption came as Anthropic reportedly prepares for an initial public offering that could value the company at more than $2 trillion. The company generated nearly $4.6 billion in revenue in 2025 and recorded a net loss of $42 billion. It plans roughly $518 billion in future cloud, computing and infrastructure spending and held $20.28 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments as of Dec. 31.
Robert Kindler, global chair of the M&A Group at Paul Weiss, does not expect the listing to move the broader stock market. Asked by CNBC how important the IPO would be, Kindler said, “I don’t think it matters.” He said companies can now raise large amounts of private capital, which reduces the need to go public to fund growth.
AI Safety And Industry Pace
The technical issues coincide with industry debates on AI safety. OpenAI recently canceled its GPT-6.1 Astra release due to internal safety standards. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has advocated for safety measures keeping pace with technological advances.
President Donald Trump met with Amodei on Sunday to discuss AI development. Speaking to Fox News, Trump said he opposes slowing the pace of AI progress, citing competition with China.
Trump is also scheduled to meet at the White House on Tuesday with executives from Alphabet Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Nvidia Corp.
