Sam Altman, Dario Amodei Warn AI Could Threaten Humanity at UN as Trump Rejects ‘Globalist’ Controls: OpenAI CEO Says AI Race Is No Reason for ‘Rash Decisions’

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned of the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence at the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, calling for greater international cooperation to manage increasingly capable AI systems.

What Did the AI Tycoons Say?

Altman called for coordination between countries, even those who are rivals or “don’t always like each other,” as they are being faced with a powerful technology, according to a CNBC report.

Meanwhile, rival Anthropic’s CEO Amodei said he thinks “AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole” if the technology is not managed properly, according to a report by Reuters.

Earlier this month, Amodei proposed slowing down the pace of AI, which saw support from Altman and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk. Amodei also raised concerns about China’s role in the global AI race, arguing that the U.S. needs to maintain its technological lead while putting stronger safety measures around frontier AI development.

Altman also said that a competitive race to defeat companies is not a reason to make “rash decisions.” “We have unilaterally slowed down in the past. We will do so in the future,” Altman added, according to the report.

OpenAI has previously called on the U.S. to take the lead in global initiatives to set technical standards for advanced AI, amid growing concerns about the rapid advancement of the technology.

Trump Not Aligned with Slowing Down AI?

The warnings from the AI leaders came on the heels of President Donald Trump‘s speech at the U.N. General Assembly. Trump noted that it was a “globalist scheme” to control AI, adding that America would continue to support AI’s progress, “not rein it in.”

On Tuesday, Trump also said that the Justice Department could step in if AI companies create serious problems, while rejecting new regulations that he argues could slow U.S. innovation.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is reportedly emerging as a leading contender to become Trump’s AI czar, potentially expanding his role in the administration’s technology and China policy. Over the weekend, Trump said that he intends to appoint a new AI adviser, or AI czar, and establish an “AI force.”
