The CNN Money Fear and Greed Index showed a decline in overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the “Fear” zone on Thursday.
U.S. stocks settled lower on Thursday, with the Dow Jones index falling more than 300 points during the session as US crude oil prices surpassed $100 per barrel, amid rising concerns of higher inflation.
Headline PPI rose 0.4% month-over-month, in line with forecasts, but the annual rate accelerated to 5.4% from a revised 4.8%, topping the 5.3% consensus.
Markets are now pricing roughly a 70% chance of a 25-basis-point Fed hike following the release of PPI data.
The consumer price index is scheduled for release on Friday, with headline CPI seen holding at 3.4% and core easing to 2.4%.
On the earnings front, Macy’s Inc. (NYSE:M) stock fell around 5% on Thursday after the retailer reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 results that topped Wall Street expectations but issued a weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings outlook. Cooper Companies Inc. (NASDAQ:COO) shares dropped 15% as the company reported mixed third-quarter financial results and cut its FY26 guidance below estimates.
Most sectors on the S&P 500 closed on a negative note, with materials, information technology and utilities stocks recording the biggest losses on Thursday. However, communication services and consumer staples stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 317 points to 52,064.10 on Thursday. The S&P 500 fell 0.58% to 7,591.70, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.65% at 26,081.72 during Thursday’s session.
Investors are awaiting earnings results from Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR), Hooker Furnishings Corp. (NASDAQ:HOFT) and MoneyHero Ltd. (NASDAQ:MNY) today.

At a current reading of 31, the index remained in the “Fear” zone on Thursday, versus a prior reading of 38.
The Fear & Greed Index is a measure of the current market sentiment. It is based on the premise that higher fear exerts pressure on stock prices, while higher greed has the opposite effect. The index is calculated based on seven equal-weighted indicators. The index ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 represents maximum fear and 100 signals maximum greed.
