Vista Energy SAB de CV (NYSE:VIST) shares are trading higher Thursday along with other oil and gas names as crude prices climb above $100 a barrel. Here’s what you should know.
- Vista Energy shares are powering higher. What’s fueling VIST momentum?
Saudi Oil Output Falls to Lowest Level Since 1990
Riyadh disclosed to OPEC that its crude output collapsed to levels not seen since 1990, with the kingdom’s own figures showing a drop of 1.9 million barrels a day down to roughly 6.24 million, Bloomberg reported, as the reignited conflict between Washington and Tehran choked off routes the country relies on to move its oil.
That mark sits below even the steep decline Saudi Arabia posted back in April during an earlier stretch of the fighting. The kingdom reported “supply to market” figure, which factors in oil pulled from storage, actually topped its production number at approximately 7.12 million barrels a day, hinting that Saudi Arabia may be leaning on stockpiled reserves to bridge the gap.
Houthi Advances Raise New Risk to Red Sea Oil Shipping
Meanwhile, Houthi fighters backed by Iran have seized the Yemeni port city of Mokha, a development that could mark a decisive shift in the country’s ongoing civil conflict and hand the group greater sway over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a chokepoint critical to global oil shipping routes.
That geopolitical flashpoint helped push West Texas Intermediate crude past the $100-a-barrel mark, following Brent crude, the global benchmark, across that same threshold days earlier.
Rising Oil and Yields Have Broader Markets On Edge
Oil’s climb hasn’t happened in isolation, with bond markets moving in tandem to pressure stocks broadly. West Texas Intermediate gained 5.6% to settle near $101.43 a barrel, and Brent rose a similar 5.5% to roughly $106.78. President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday he anticipates oil prices dropping once the election has passed, though pricing in the futures market suggests traders expect the underlying conflict to persist well past that point.
Government bond yields climbed in tandem with crude, pushing the 10-year note to 4.93%, a level unseen since 2023, after a hotter-than-expected reading on wholesale prices strengthened the case that the Federal Reserve could hike rates at next week’s meeting. Market-based odds of that outcome jumped to roughly 70% in the wake of the inflation data, up from about 62% beforehand, with another key inflation report covering consumer prices set for release Friday.
