Joby Aviation Inc. (NYSE:JOBY) shares remain flat Thursday after touching a fresh 52-week low intraday, as the company kicked off a week of real-world flight demonstrations in Texas alongside a separate coast-to-coast autonomy tour. Here’s what you need to know.
- Joby Aviation stock is showing downward pressure. What should traders watch with JOBY?
Texas Launches its First White House-Backed eVTOL Flight Program
North Texas became the launch site Thursday for the country’s first flights under the federally backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, with Joby spending the week flying actual passenger-style routes throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area, touching down directly at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport along with other prominent destinations in the region.
The effort stems from a winning transportation proposal Texas submitted to participate in the federal initiative, and follows similar test flights Joby has already flown over San Francisco and New York, with this round aimed at gathering the kind of hands-on flight data regulators say they need before greenlighting commercial passenger service.
To back the campaign and plant roots in the region long-term, Joby signed a lease on a 45,000-square-foot space at Fort Worth Alliance Airport. Founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt pointed to Texas as uniquely equipped, given its infrastructure and existing partnerships, to help steer aviation into its next chapter, framing the federal pilot program as a chance to get Joby’s aircraft flying over cities and move faster toward launching paid service.
Joby’s Autonomous J208 Continues a Coast-To-Coast Tour
At the same time, a separate Joby aircraft is making its own cross-country trip. The J208, an autonomous system built into a modified Cessna Caravan, is just getting underway on a planned month-long journey touching 10 different states after departing California on September 8, with organizers using the stops to highlight how the technology could eventually serve freight hauling, medevac operations, disaster relief and military supply chains.
Joby says the autonomy technology behind the aircraft has already racked up over 400 flights and 800 hours flying itself, with a track record that includes three separate outings alongside the U.S. military, one of which had personnel stationed in Guam piloting the plane remotely from roughly 4,000 miles away.
Joby Stock Touches a New 52-Week Low Before Recovering
Even with both storylines generating positive headlines, Joby shares briefly fell to a fresh 52-week low near $6.25 during Thursday’s session before recovering to trade slightly higher on the day, within a broader 52-week range that had otherwise bottomed near $6.42.
