Cathie Wood didn’t wait for Shopify Inc‘s (NASDAQ:SHOP) chart to turn bullish before backing the company. Now, as Shopify stock approaches a Golden Cross—a closely watched technical pattern that signals strengthening momentum—the charts are beginning to reflect a conviction ARK Invest has maintained through years of volatility.

Shopify’s Golden Cross
Shopify’s recent rally has pushed its 50-day moving average within striking distance of its 200-day moving average, setting up what technical analysts call a Golden Cross. The pattern occurs when the shorter-term average moves above the longer-term one, often signaling improving long-term momentum.
Like all technical indicators, however, a Golden Cross is better viewed as confirmation than prediction. It suggests investor sentiment is improving, but it does not guarantee further gains.
The setup follows a strong recovery in Shopify shares after a volatile period for growth stocks, with momentum indicators pointing to sustained buying interest.
Cathie Wood’s Shopify Conviction
Long before the chart began improving, Shopify had already earned a prominent place in Wood’s investment strategy.
As of Aug. 31, Shopify ranked as the seventh-largest holding in the ARK Innovation ETF (BATS:ARKK), accounting for 3.83% of the fund’s portfolio, according to ARK Invest’s latest holdings disclosure.
That conviction has remained largely intact despite modest portfolio adjustments.
ARK Investment Management’s second-quarter 2026 Form 13F shows the firm trimmed its Shopify position by approximately 21,700 shares, reducing the holding from roughly 4.18 million shares to 4.16 million shares. The value of the position declined about 4% quarter over quarter, reflecting both the smaller position and market price movements.
The distinction is important. A trim does not necessarily signal a change in conviction, particularly for actively managed funds that regularly rebalance positions. Shopify continues to rank among ARK’s largest disclosed investments even after the adjustment.
When Fundamentals and Charts Align
Wood has consistently argued that disruptive growth companies should be evaluated based on their long-term innovation potential rather than near-term market sentiment. Shopify has long fit that thesis, benefiting from secular trends in ecommerce, merchant software and digital commerce infrastructure.
The emerging Golden Cross suggests technical traders may now be reaching a conclusion that long-term growth investors embraced much earlier.
That convergence is often worth watching. While institutional investors typically build positions based on business fundamentals, technical traders tend to respond to price action. When both groups begin pointing in the same direction, stocks can attract a broader investor base.
Investment Takeaway
Shopify’s approaching Golden Cross does not change the company’s investment case overnight, but it does strengthen the technical backdrop for a stock that has remained one of Wood’s highest-conviction holdings.
For investors, the more meaningful development is not the chart pattern itself, but the growing alignment between improving market momentum and a long-standing institutional thesis.
