Shares of Expion Energy Inc (NASDAQ:XPON) are trading sharply higher Monday, following a major strategic expansion into upstream energy.

Strategic Pivot to Energy Production Targets AI Data Center Power
The company announced the $3.425 million cash acquisition of an oil and gas exploration prospect in Eastern Louisiana, marking its entry into oil and gas production. The platform encompasses roughly 3,000 net acres of existing leases and access to 13,000 net acres of mineral title research.
Management noted the expansion positions the firm to potentially supply long-term natural gas to meet surging power demand from regional AI data center developments and Gulf Coast LNG export markets.
Private Placement Provides Up To $100 Million In Capital
Further boosting momentum, Expion announced on Monday that it closed an initial $9 million private placement on Friday. The financing involved issuing 8% Convertible Debentures and Warrants, generating approximately $8.2 million in net proceeds.
The agreement includes an additional investment right allowing investors to purchase up to $91 million in preferred stock upon shareholder approval, bringing potential total fresh capital to $100 million.
Leadership Overhaul And Rebrand Align With Multi-Pronged Energy Model
Concurrent with the asset acquisition, Expion announced a C-suite transition and official corporate rebrand. Effective Monday, industry veteran Kevin Sellers assumes the role of Chief Executive Officer and board member, succeeding Joseph Hammer, who transitions to interim Chairman.
Sellers brings extensive investment banking and energy owner-operator experience to lead the new exploration division. To reflect its broadened scope beyond lithium-ion storage solutions.
