The Social Security Administration added 14 serious diseases and medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances list Tuesday, expanding a program designed to speed up disability applications for people who meet the statutory standard for disability benefits.
The Compassionate Allowances, or CAL, program identifies serious medical conditions that can qualify for an accelerated disability determination. With Tuesday’s additions, the list now includes 314 conditions. More than 1.2 million people with severe disabilities have been approved through the accelerated process since the initiative began.
The newly added conditions include Aicardi syndrome, Bohring-Opitz syndrome, CASK-related gene disorders, hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, Lafora disease, primary cardiac sarcoma, primary intracranial malignant melanoma, uveal melanoma with metastases and several rare genetic and neurological conditions.
“Social Security is strengthening our disability programs and making the disability determination process better, faster, and higher-quality to serve the American public,” Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said. “The Compassionate Allowances initiative cuts through red tape and allows us to deliver support to individuals who experience life-changing diagnoses and need help fast.”
Faster Review for Serious Conditions
When a person applies for disability benefits, SSA must obtain medical records to make an accurate determination. The agency uses technology to identify potential CAL conditions and expedite claims processing.
Through its Health IT program, SSA can securely receive electronic medical records in some claims, allowing adjudicators to make faster and more accurate decisions. The system is not available for every claim.
The expansion follows last year’s addition of 13 conditions, which brought the CAL list to 300. At the time, more than 1.1 million people had received benefits through the fast-track system. The program is designed to move qualifying disability cases through the process more quickly, although applicants still need medical documentation proving their diagnosis.
Standard disability claims can take three to five months for approval, while CAL cases are generally reviewed more quickly. Applicants may apply online, by phone or in person and may need to provide medical records, treatment histories and work history information.

The expansion comes as Social Security faces broader financial pressure. The Social Security Board of Trustees has projected that the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund will deplete its reserves in the fourth quarter of 2032, after which incoming revenue would cover 78% of scheduled retirement and survivor benefits.
