The U.S. Commerce Department reportedly granted Anthropic permission Friday to release its Claude Mythos 5 model to approximately 100 companies and federal agencies.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in a letter to Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown, wrote that “appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model,” CNBC reported.
Approval for Claude Fable 5 was not included.
Anthropic and the Commerce Department did not immediately respond to Benzinga‘s requests for comment.
A Broader AI Regulatory Pattern Emerges
Anthropic had earlier suspended access to both its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models following a government directive citing national security export controls restricting access by foreign nationals. The company said the pause was required to comply with federal instructions covering “any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States.”
Earlier on Friday, Anthropic rival OpenAI announced three new models, GPT 5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna, while limiting initial distribution to trusted partners at the government’s request. The government’s intervention was driven by GPT 5.6’s “Mythos-like” capabilities.
The Anthropic, led by Dario Amodei, has been in the news this year for several reasons. The Pentagon previously designated Anthropic a supply chain risk, a label historically reserved for foreign adversaries, after negotiations over military AI usage collapsed. Anthropic has also filed a lawsuit against the Department of Defense.
