Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) slammed President Donald Trump on Tuesday, outlining the impact of surging gas prices on Americans amid the Iran war.
Trump Doesn’t Care About Gas Prices
In a post on X, Newsom’s official Press Office handle posted a clip from an interview the Governor gave. “Donald Trump says he doesn’t care about gas prices,” the post said, adding that “working families” did not enjoy that “luxury.”
“The cost of diesel is off the charts,” Newsom said, adding that the cost of groceries would also be affected to reflect the extra dollars spent on diesel as truckers deliver goods. “We’re going to see this cascading effect because of what Donald Trump has recklessly done.”
“Even if the Iran conflict ended tomorrow, the economic damage would take months to unwind,” the post said. Newsom, in the interview, also criticized Trump’s tariff and trade policies, as well as abandoning alliances with other countries.
Oil, Gas Prices
According to data collected by the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average gas price fell to $4.491/gallon. California commanded the highest price for gas, with the average gasoline price in the state at $6.109/gallon.
Diesel’s national average cost was $5.584/gallon in the U.S., the AAA data showed, with California diesel prices hitting $7.377/gallon in the state, according to the same data.
Crude oil prices fell with the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude at $91.97/bbl at press time, down 2.04%. On the other hand, Brent crude was also down 1.59% to $98/barrel. The United States Oil Fund (NYSE:USO), an ETF that tracks WTI, fell 0.29% during the after-hours trading session on Friday.
Gavin Newsom Criticizes Gas Price Rise
Newsom has been a vocal critic of the administration’s handling of the Iran war, as well as the rising fuel costs. The Governor had earlier urged California residents to avoid Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVX), saying that big oil companies profit from the Iran war.
He had also urged Trump to lower gas prices as fuel costs exceeded $6/gallon in California. Newsom also slammed Trump’s Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, for urging Americans to take a road trip.
Gas prices also hit record highs on Memorial Day, with costs hitting the highest since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine back in 2022.
