On Tuesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) scheduled an August 18 special election to fill the congressional seat left vacant after former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) resigned amid multiple sexual misconduct allegations.
Swalwell Resigns Amid Sexual Misconduct Claims
Newsom issued a proclamation setting the election date following Swalwell’s resignation from Congress earlier on Tuesday.
The move comes after reports from multiple media outlets alleging sexual misconduct by Swalwell, including accusations from a former aide and additional claims from other women, reported CNN.
One woman, Lonna Drewes, alleged that Swalwell drugged, raped, and choked her. Swalwell has denied all allegations.
Swalwell said in a statement posted on X, “I am suspending my campaign for Governor.”
He added, “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”
Sara Azari, Swalwell’s attorney, said in a statement, “Congressman Eric Swalwell categorically and unequivocally denies each and every allegation of sexual misconduct and assault that has been leveled against him,” reported The Hill.
She added he would pursue “every available legal remedy.”
Swalwell Campaign Collapses Amid Allegations
Last week, Swalwell said sexual assault allegations against him are “flat false” and vowed to fight them, while acknowledging past mistakes and apologizing to his wife and supporters.
He maintained the claims emerged as he was leading the California governor’s race.
FBI Director Kash Patel said Swalwell has denied the allegations and would be welcome to meet with investigators.
Patel also urged anyone with relevant information to contact the FBI, stating the “door is open to all.”
Swalwell’s California gubernatorial campaign collapsed after key allies withdrew support and fundraising was halted amid sexual misconduct allegations.
Several Democratic officials, including campaign leadership and senators, distanced themselves and major fundraising support was suspended.
