California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has slammed the President Donald Trump administration as the partial government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) enters its 24th day.

Busy ‘Owning The Dems’

In a post on the social media platform X on Sunday, Newsom’s official Press Office quoted a post by the Transportation Security Administration that blamed the Democratic lawmakers for shutting down the DHS as passengers missed flights due to staffing shortages.

“The official TSA account is spending more time “owning the Dems” than keeping you safe,” the post said. “Let that sink in,” Newsom’s Press Office said, ending the post.

U.S.-Iran War

The U.S.-Iran war has caused a significant impact on crude oil supply chains and prices as the Iranian government announced it would be closing off the Strait of Hormuz — a key trade route for crude oil — as tensions escalate in the region, 11 days after a joint U.S.-Israeli operation resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The conflict has also caused disruptions in the global aviation industry, as last week, The Koebissi Letter shared that over 23,000 cancellations were reported following the conflict, resulting in almost $1 billion lost in revenue.

Gavin Newsom Vs Trump

Amid the tensions and the price surge, the Governor has been facing off against Trump. Recently, Newsom took to social media to slam Trump, posting a screenshot of Trump’s 2013 post, which had expressed concern about the rising oil prices, with a caption, “We noticed.”

Following the war, Trump’s approval rating among the masses has also dropped, with a recent survey showing that the 47th President experienced a 3-point drop, with over 54% of respondents saying they disapproved of Trump.

Meanwhile, Newsom has been touting himself as a possible candidate for the 2028 Presidential Election, but he was still outperformed by Trump, according to the survey.

DHS Shutdown, Kristi Noem Fired

Meanwhile, the DHS is still facing a shutdown as lawmakers disagreed over funding of the agency following multiple incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, which have resulted in several people being shot.

The DHS, facing a shortage of workforce at the TSA, announced it was shutting down the PreCheck and Global Entry programs, but later rolled back the PreCheck suspension following criticism.

Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was also fired from her role following a $220 million government advertising campaign, which was defended by Noem in congressional hearings.

Prediction Markets Weigh In

Amid the news, traders on prediction market platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi have been betting on the shutdown lasting for the duration of March.

Following her removal, traders on prediction market platforms also bet on who will exit the Trump administration next, with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Administrator Amy Gleason topping the list of candidates, followed by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi next on the list.
