Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly called for the reinitiation of nuclear talks with the U.S.
What Happened: The semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that Pezeshkian has directed the recommencement of nuclear discussions with the U.S.
However, the agency later added that the details of these potential talks are “not yet finalized.”
This development comes amidst escalating tensions between Iran and the U.S., with the U.S. military fleet reportedly moving towards the region.
Recent diplomatic activities have been noted, with several regional countries, including Turkiye, intervening to alleviate tensions between the two nations.
Esmail Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, confirmed that there is ongoing communication between the two countries. He refuted receiving “any kind of ultimatum or deadline” in the negotiations with the U.S.
According to the outlet, Baqaei said the talks are focused squarely on lifting sanctions, calling it a central demand for Iran.
He noted that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has argued the nuclear file has repeatedly been used as a justification to pressure the country, and emphasized that Iran is seeking the removal of what it views as unfair sanctions in return for assurances about the peaceful intent of its nuclear program.
Why It Matters: This development is significant given the historical context. Iran and the U.S. were previously involved in indirect nuclear negotiations in June last year.
However, these talks were suspended following an Israeli attack on Iran. The renewal of these talks could potentially ease tensions and contribute to regional stability.
