Amazon (AMZN) has filed a request to the US Federal Communications Commission seeking permission to launch 3,236 communications satellites, media reports said Friday, citing a July 4 filing.
The request is for the company’s Kuiper project, which is focused on offering satellite-based broadband internet access, based on April filings to the International Telecommunication Union, according to reports.
According to Bloomberg News, Amazon said its Kuiper satellites will provide “fixed broadband communications services to rural and hard-to-reach areas.” The agency reportedly coordinates trajectories and radio-frequency use.
Amazon also offered the possibility of “high-throughput mobile broadband connectivity services for aircraft, maritime vessels, and land vehicles.”
The FCC has already greenlighted close to 13,000 low-Earth orbit satellites, including 11,943 satellites for Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies, which launched an initial batch of 60 spacecraft in May, Bloomberg reported.
In the FCC application, Amazon said its satellites would operate at altitudes of about 370 miles to 390 miles, according to Bloomberg.
