On Monday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced GPT-6.1 Terra, a faster, lower-cost AI model designed to handle computer-based tasks.
Altman Highlights GPT-6.1 Terra’s Computer-Use Capabilities
Altman announced the model on X, writing, “6.1 Terra is here! It is good at a lot of things, but we are especially excited for this new era of computer use.”
OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, positioning it as a more affordable alternative within its GPT-6 model family.
The model is designed to interact with computer screens and perform tasks such as filling out forms, processing invoices, editing videos and interpreting technical drawings.
OpenAI Asserts Faster Performance and Fewer Errors
OpenAI said GPT-6.1 Terra can complete tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
The company also reported that its internal testing showed an error rate of 16.7% on difficult prompts at low reasoning effort, down from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra.
The results come from OpenAI’s own evaluations and have not been independently verified.
The company said the model is also better at staying within task boundaries, identifying obstacles and resisting prompt-injection attempts.
However, OpenAI cautioned that Terra is not intended to replace its most capable models for every use case. “For the most complex coding tasks, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice,” the company said.
GPT-6.1 Terra API Pricing Starts at $1 Per Million Input Tokens
For developers, GPT-6.1 Terra costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens through the API, half the listed rates for GPT-6.1 Sol.
GPT-6.1 Terra is now available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers through ChatGPT Work and Codex.
The AI startup recommends testing Terra on existing workloads before migrating applications. Requests exceeding 272,000 input tokens incur higher pricing across the entire request, Medium noted.
