Real Vision chief crypto analyst Jamie Coutts says a break above $86,000 could send Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) toward $100,000 quickly, even as he shifts his own portfolio toward Ethereum and DeFi applications.

Why Coutts Sees $100,000 Within Reach

Coutts on Thursday told the Milk Road podcast that $85,000 to $86,000 marks a cluster of major resistance built from on-chain data, spot positioning and the high of May’s counter-trend rally.

Clearing that zone would remove the overhang keeping Bitcoin range-bound, he said, opening a fast move toward six figures.

Coutts called Bitcoin’s current low already in place, arguing any dip tied to macro volatility is a buying opportunity rather than a warning sign.

He flagged two reasons to expect volatility ahead:

  • Rising margin debt: hit its highest three-month annualized rate since 2007 in Q2
  • Slowing global liquidity growth: has pulled back since early this year

Even so, Coutts said the Trump administration understands liquidity management well enough to respond with stimulus if equity markets wobble, given how much tax revenue depends on continued economic growth.

Why Coutts Calls This Crypto’s ‘Payback Era’

Coutts built a quality screening system tracking fee durability, token supply discipline and how much revenue protocols actually return to holders through buybacks and burns.

Crypto protocols paid out nearly $2 billion to token holders over the past year, he said, even as new token issuance hit record lows.

That shift shows up in performance data too:

  • 2022 to present: high-quality tokens by Coutts’ screen underperformed Bitcoin’s 82% gain badly, with the top third of ranked assets still down 50% and the bottom third down 73%
  • Year to date: that pattern flipped, with the top third of quality-ranked tokens gaining 49% while Bitcoin fell roughly 6%

Where Coutts Has Repositioned His Portfolio

Bitcoin remains Coutts’ largest holding, but he’s cut that allocation sharply, from roughly 80% to 85% down to 30% to 35%. Here’s where that capital went instead:

  • Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH): now one of his largest single positions
  • DeFi applications: taken from 0% up to about 20% of his portfolio
  • Aave (CRYPTO: AAVE): his main lending exposure
  • Derive (CRYPTO: DRV): held since March, one of his standout performers

He also continues holding Zcash (CRYPTO: ZEC), bought back in April, alongside Athena (CRYPTO: ENA), which he treats more as a shorter-term trade than a long-term core holding.

Looking further out, Coutts pointed to two trends he expects to smooth out crypto’s traditional boom-bust cycles: tokenized real-world assets, which have grown 16-fold over three years, and stablecoins, which have doubled over the same stretch.

He also flagged agentic payments, where AI agents transact using crypto rails, as a theme still in its early stages but one he expects to become significant by 2027.
