Stanford neuroscientist Andrew Huberman predicts Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META), OpenAI and Anthropic could eventually become biotech companies, as the AI race expands into non-invasive technology for reading from and writing to the brain
Neuroscience Is Now Part of the AI Playbook
“Every single one of those is going to be a biotech company,” Huberman said in a podcast interview on the ‘Invest Like The Best’ episode aired Tuesday. “They’re all interested in the brain.”
Huberman said the companies’ leaders “understand a lot of neuroscience.” He said their shared goal is to “read and write from your brain non-invasively.”
He also pointed to Elon Musk’s Neuralink, a neurotechnology company that develops implantable brain-computer interfaces, saying Musk understands what the company is trying to achieve and what is currently possible.
Why the Brain Is the Next AI Battleground
Huberman called this “the real arms race of AI.” During his appearance on the podcast, he said the key challenge is finding non-invasive ways, most likely ultrasound, to stimulate or quiet specific brain areas with spatial and temporal precision. That means reaching the right neurons at the right moment.
He predicted AI would then learn to titrate stimulation to each user’s brain state, though he acknowledged the idea “sounds kind of science fiction.”
Earlier in the interview, Huberman said non-invasive brain-stimulation devices would likely start with sleep, since people are already comfortable with tracking it.
The American neuroscientist named OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Musk among technologists he said are becoming neuroscientists.
