President Donald Trump’s new AI accord with leading technology executives is facing criticism from Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who says the president is giving AI CEOs “free PR” after failing to secure a binding technology agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Ro Khanna Calls Trump’s AI Accord ‘Pinky Promises’
On Tuesday, Khanna took to X after Trump unveiled the White House Accord on Super Intelligence, also known as the Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities.
“We are a nation of laws, not pinky promises,” Khanna wrote. “Trump let Xi walk away without a binding treaty on AI. And now he’s doing free PR for AI CEOs.”
The comments came after Trump was asked about the agreement following a White House meeting with technology leaders. Trump described the commitment as “morally binding.”
The voluntary accord includes commitments from executives including Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOG) CEO Sundar Pichai, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI president Greg Brockman, Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s (NASDAQ:SPCX) xAI CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang.
The agreement calls for companies to establish internal safeguards and use outside reviews of their AI systems.
Trump, Xi Agree to AI Dialogue
The U.S. and China agreed to establish a Super Intelligence dialogue to discuss AI risks and benefits, with another exchange expected by November, BBC reported on Tuesday.
The countries also agreed to create a bilateral communication channel for AI-related incidents.
However, the two countries did not agree on jointly developing or regulating frontier AI models during Xi’s visit. Trump has also said he does not want to integrate U.S. and Chinese AI development.
Previously, Khanna had raised concerns about Chinese investment in the U.S.
He is also reportedly preparing to introduce an AI bill that would establish strict liability rules and prohibit “recursive” self-improving AI until the government sets safety standards.
