Ripple has partnered with CSD BR, one of Brazil’s central securities depositories, to bring the XRP Ledger into the country’s regulated financial infrastructure for the first time.
How the Partnership Actually Works
Ripple announced Tuesday that CSD BR will start using the XRP Ledger to record and audit financial assets, beginning with BTG Pactual investment fund shares.
CSD BR keeps full control over registration, deposit, and settlement, and the blockchain simply adds a second layer where everyone can check that the records match up in near real time.
The scale here is significant: CSD BR oversees more than BRL 22 trillion, roughly $4.3 trillion, in registered assets.
The fund shares run through Ripple’s tokenization standard and mirror onto the XRP Ledger, though access stays limited to banks and corporate clients in Brazil who still go through standard KYC and anti-money laundering checks.
Regulators and courts also retain leverage over the system, since CSD BR can freeze assets or reverse transactions whenever ordered to.
“We chose to start with record mirroring because it is the safest and most responsible way to introduce a new technology into critical market infrastructure,” said Daniel Polano Spreafico, Head of Products and Clients at CSD BR.
Why This Matters Beyond a Pilot
Ripple Managing Director for Latin America Silvio Pegado called the partnership a major milestone, noting it moves distributed ledger technology past pilots and proofs of concept into live record-keeping infrastructure inside a national capital market.
Once the mirroring phase gets validated, the plan expands to native asset issuance and trading, with Real Estate and Agribusiness Receivables Certificates under consideration as major segments of Brazil’s fixed income market.
BTG Pactual Partner Luis Furtado said the deal lets the bank apply blockchain directly to the fund market while keeping current processes and the official asset record intact.
