Nu Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:NU) shares are slipping Monday after reports that the company is considering acquiring Monzo in a deal that could value the British neobank at up to $13 billion.
- Nu stock is feeling bearish pressure. Why is NU stock dropping?
Nu Holdings Weighs $13 Billion Monzo Acquisition
According to the Financial Times, Nu is weighing its biggest buyout ever, with a potential deal to be funded through a combination of cash and shares. The two companies have not confirmed the transaction, and the FT reports Nu may ultimately opt to take a stake in Monzo rather than pursue a full acquisition. Morgan Stanley and Qatalyst are advising Monzo on its options.
The talks come as Monzo faces intensifying competition from Revolut, while CEO Diana Layfield leads a turnaround effort that has included exiting the company’s U.S. operations and expanding into new markets such as Ireland and Spain.
Why the Stock Is Under Pressure
Investors appear wary that a large acquisition — potentially valuing Monzo at up to double its 2024 valuation of £4.5 billion — could pressure Nu’s near-term earnings or dilute shareholders if funded partly through new stock, even as analysts broadly view the strategic logic favorably. Research firm Northwise Project noted over the weekend that Nu’s 2030 earnings “look acceptable” under its base case, but flagged a “Stress case” that could produce a roughly $4.3 billion loss in 2027 and halt share repurchases. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits was described as “bearish” following the reports, with one user writing that the Monzo move “could be great long term but expect further pressure on the stock if the acquisition goes through.”
Nu’s Broader Position
Nu has become the world’s largest neobank by customer count, generating annual revenue of more than $15.7 billion through its dominant position in Brazil and expanding presence in Mexico and Colombia. The Monzo talks emerge as Nu’s own stock remains under pressure, closing last week at $13.60, down 28% from its all-time high.
