Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE:BSX) anticipates a material hit to its third-quarter and full-year 2026 financial results following an August cybersecurity incident that disrupted global operations.
The company expects to miss its previously issued net sales and earnings guidance as a result.
Operational Disruptions And Recovery Efforts
The unauthorized activity on certain company systems, detected on Aug. 25, triggered a network outage affecting access to operating systems and business applications.
These system failures hampered the company’s ability to manufacture, process, and ship customer orders.
In response, leadership activated containment protocols and enlisted third-party cybersecurity professionals to investigate the breach.
The company said it has not identified evidence of ongoing unauthorized access to its systems, though the investigation remains ongoing. Boston Scientific has not disclosed whether any data was compromised.
Major distribution centers are now processing and shipping customer orders at or above normal operating levels.
Furthermore, sterilization facilities and most global manufacturing plants are operational again, although a timeline for complete system restoration remains unknown.
Financial Outlook And Future Updates
Because of the outage, the firm believes it will fall short of the adjusted earnings per share and net sales growth projections issued in late July.
On July 29, the medical device maker guided third-quarter net sales growth of approximately 3%-5% on a reported and organic basis, equivalent to sales of $5.217 billion-$5.318 billion, versus a consensus of $5.358 billion. It had also guided to adjusted earnings of 80-82 cents, against a consensus of 83 cents.
The company now says it is unlikely to reach either range.
While management expects to recoup a portion of the delayed revenue by clearing backlogs and fulfilling pending orders, the complete financial fallout remains unclear.
Executives plan to detail the revised financial and operational outlook during the third-quarter earnings conference call scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Despite the near-term headwinds, the company does not foresee the cyberattack causing long-term material damage to its overall financial condition.
