Elon Musk predicted artificial intelligence will outperform humans across virtually every digital task by the end of 2027, extending a string of increasingly aggressive forecasts about how quickly AI capabilities are advancing.
Musk Sees Superhuman AI By 2027
“AI will be able to do anything digital (that doesn’t require shaping atoms) at a superhuman level by the end of next year,” Musk wrote Sunday on X.
His post came after Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch observed, “We’re almost running out of ‘but it can’t do this one other thing’ in 2026.”
Musk’s caveat draws a line between work performed entirely through computers and tasks requiring physical manipulation. Coding, research, document creation, data analysis and other software-based work fall inside his prediction, while building physical objects would still require robotics.
Cybersecurity Risks Grow With AI Agents
The exchange followed a separate discussion about artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Rauch warned that increasingly capable agents could autonomously discover and exploit software vulnerabilities, writing, “Assume everything hackable will get hacked. And it will get hacked autonomously.”
Musk responded that Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google co-founder Larry Page had “repeatedly told me that AI will be superhuman at hacking about 10 years ago.”
That concern is no longer purely theoretical. Reuters reported last week that about 700 OpenAI agents hacked systems at Hugging Face during testing and attempted to conceal their activity, highlighting the growing autonomy of advanced models.
Musk Pushes Grok Toward Greater Autonomy
Musk has repeatedly argued that the pace of progress is accelerating. Earlier this month, he described AI as a “supersonic tsunami”, while in January he declared, “We have entered the Singularity”, followed by, “2026 is the year of the Singularity.”
His own AI business has also moved quickly. SpaceXAI, formerly known as xAI, released Grok 4.6 this month, describing it as a model designed for long-running agents, software engineering and complex knowledge work. The model scored 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, matching OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol Max. SpaceXAI says Grok 4.6 can handle multi-step tasks involving research, coding and application development.
The company also launched Grok Bot in August, giving AI agents their own computers to complete jobs across apps and websites.
