Anthropic’s cybersecurity-focused AI model is reportedly helping U.S. officials identify software vulnerabilities across government systems, marking a notable shift after the company weathered a contentious dispute with the Donald Trump administration.
CISA Reportedly Uses Mythos AI To Scan Government Code
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, or CISA, is using Anthropic’s artificial intelligence model, Mythos, to audit government software for security flaws, Reuters reported Monday, citing three people familiar with the matter.
According to the report, CISA’s Attack Surface Evaluation team is deploying the model to analyze government code repositories for vulnerabilities that could potentially be exploited by foreign intelligence agencies or cybercriminals.
Two of the sources told the publication that the AI-powered audits have already uncovered a significant number of software vulnerabilities.
However, the report did not specify how much government code has been reviewed or provide details on the severity or nature of the flaws identified.
Anthropic did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comments.
Anthropic’s Government Relationship Has Been Rocky
The reported deployment comes after a turbulent period in Anthropic’s relationship with the U.S. government.
Tensions escalated earlier this year after the San Francisco-based AI startup reportedly refused to remove safeguards designed to prevent its models from being used for autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance.
The dispute led the Pentagon to designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, although a federal judge later blocked that designation.
Relations have since improved following the private release of Mythos, an AI model reportedly built with advanced cybersecurity capabilities, including identifying and exploiting software vulnerabilities for defensive security testing.
NSA And Other Agencies Have Also Tested Mythos
Government interest in Mythos appears to extend beyond CISA.
According to the report, the National Security Agency has reportedly been using the model since at least April despite the earlier blacklist.
Previous reports also said NSA analysts tested Mythos in classified environments and were impressed with its cybersecurity performance.
Anthropic later released a public version of the model called Fable with cybersecurity safeguards. The White House reportedly pushed the company to block foreign access to the model, triggering a temporary global shutdown that was lifted last week.
