President Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that there is “no reason” for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates.
“We had a great report. We’re doing great, and it’s unfair that whenever you do great, they want to raise interest rates,” Trump told Kristen Welker on NBC’s Meet The Press. “It should be the opposite. My feeling is that when a country is doing well, they shouldn’t be penalized by immediately raising interest rates.”
Some economists and analysts have said that the Fed may raise interest rates following a stronger-than-expected May jobs report. Employers added 172,000 jobs in May, and previous months were revised upward, according to the Labor Department.
Trump also praised new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, saying, “Kevin is fantastic, and I want him to do whatever he wants. I don’t want to have a big influence on him.”
Politico reported that Trump ended the interview abruptly shortly thereafter, when Welker asked him to provide evidence of voter fraud that Trump alleged was taking place in the vote-counting in California’s primaries last week.
