On Sunday, President Donald Trump said a new ballroom being built on White House grounds is a security necessity, arguing that the project’s design would have prevented the gunfire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and urging that nothing slow construction.
Trump tied his push to the shooting at the dinner, where authorities said a suspect opened fire at the Washington Hilton and a Secret Service agent was wounded but protected by a ballistic vest.
In his Truth Social post, Trump wrote that presidents for roughly 150 years have pushed for a large event space that can be locked down, and he argued the ballroom now rising would have stopped the incident.
He also said the structure is being built within the perimeter of the White House complex and designed without overhead rooms that could allow unsecured access from above.
Trump called the venue a “Militarily Top Secret Ballroom” and said it includes what he described as the highest tier of protective measures while still being intended as an attractive setting for major events.

He said the job is staying within its budget and is running well ahead of the timeline, adding that he wants the pace accelerated.
Trump also demanded that a lawsuit aimed at blocking or delaying the project be thrown out, describing the plaintiff as a dog walker and arguing she lacks standing.
As he framed it, the legal fight is a direct obstacle to an urgent security upgrade, according to Truthsocial.
The correspondents’ dinner attack he pointed to unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where the Secret Service said the suspect carried a shotgun and fired on an agent inside the hotel.
Officials said President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and multiple Cabinet secretaries were among the attendees at the event.
Who Is Shooting Suspect Cole Tomas Allen?
A law enforcement official identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, about 31, from Torrance, California.
D.C. police said Allen was believed to be staying at the hotel, and authorities said they had not identified a motive.
A LinkedIn profile matching Allen’s name describes him as an independent game developer and a part-time instructor with C2 Education, a tutoring company, and it notes he was recognized as teacher of the month in December 2024.
The same profile lists a mechanical engineering degree from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 and a computer science master’s degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.
Federal Election Commission records show Allen donated $25 to then-Vice President Kamala Harris‘ presidential campaign in October 2024.
After the shots, several political leaders used social media to commend the speed of the law enforcement response and denounce political violence.
Greene Challenges Trump’s Domestic Accountability Focus
In earlier statements, ex-Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene raised questions about the narrative surrounding the assassination attempt on then-candidate Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, emphasizing the need for clarity for the victim’s family. She argued that Trump should be leading the inquiry, highlighting a contrast between his focus on international conflicts and domestic accountability, which aligns with concerns over security raised by the recent shooting incident.
This scrutiny comes as Greene has expressed skepticism about Trump’s economic perception, warning that ignoring the realities faced by ordinary Americans could jeopardize the Republican Party’s standing in upcoming elections, especially as they navigate the implications of recent violent events like the correspondents’ dinner shooting.Greene raised questions.
Why A White House Ballroom Could Change Security
Trump argued the core security advantage is control: a purpose-built space on White House property rather than a hotel ballroom, where public areas and guest rooms can complicate perimeter management.
He also said the new design avoids placing unsecured people above the event floor, a risk he highlighted while discussing the hotel venue where the shooting occurred.
The wounded Secret Service agent survived because a bulletproof vest blocked a fatal injury, authorities said.
Trump said the incident is exactly why he wants the ballroom finished without delays and why he believes the court challenge should be dismissed.
