Elon Musk Slams SPLC: ‘Stoking Hate Was Incredibly Lucrative’

On Saturday, Elon Musk used a series of posts on X to argue that nonprofit watchdogs can have financial motives to keep social conflict in the spotlight. Musk’s comments centered on the Southern Poverty Law Center and, in separate posts, he also criticized the NAACP.

In one message, he wrote that “Incentives explain outcomes,” and claimed that groups branded as “anti-hate” would risk losing their reason to exist if hostility were truly reduced. Musk argued that this dynamic encourages fundraising organizations to intensify tensions rather than resolve them.

How Musk Challenges Anti-Hate Profit Models

Musk specifically singled out the SPLC, alleging it benefited from keeping anger elevated because donations follow. He added, “Actually eliminating hatred would end the existence of “anti-hate” groups, so groups like SPLC amplified hatred instead to get more donations.”

In another post, Musk took a sarcastic swipe at accusations of extremism directed at him, writing: “The fact that I wasn’t funded by the SPLC proves I’m not a Nazi”. The remark appeared as part of his broader critique of how he believes labels and funding interact.

Are Nonprofits Fueling Divisions For Profit?

Musk also claimed the NAACP and SPLC operate in tandem, writing: “The NAACP are buddies with SPLC. Both of them stoke hatred relentlessly.” The post was accompanied by a quoted message from another account about the NAACP.

The Financial Gains Behind Hate-Mongering Claims

In another Saturday post, Musk mocked the SPLC’s investment performance compared with well-known political and market-commentary references, writing: “SPLC got better returns than Nancy Pelosi and inverse Cramer combined!” That message quoted David Sacks, who asserted the SPLC “invested $270k in Charlottesville and got $81 million in additional donations.”

Musk framed the donations discussion as evidence that financial rewards can shape institutional behavior. The posts did not include supporting documentation beyond the quoted claims and Musk’s assertions.
