Anthropic unveiled its intention to expand its London footprint with a new office that can accommodate 800 employees.

The Dario Amodei-led company currently has over 200 employees in London. The new office will be located in the Knowledge Quarter area of London, which is a hub of several AI firms, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG), Meta (NASDAQ:META), Synthesia, and Wayve.

Pip White, Anthropic’s head of EMEA north, told CNBC that London is a key research and commercial hub for Anthropic outside the U.S., and the Knowledge Quarter expansion will support further growth.

According to White, the UK offers a unique blend of ambitious businesses and institutions that comprehend AI safety stakes, coupled with an exceptional pool of AI talent.

Anthropic did not immediately respond to Benzinga‘s request for comments.

UK Woos Anthropic As AI Risks Rise

This expansion comes amid reports of the UK government courting Anthropic with proposals for a London office expansion and a potential dual listing, as the AI startup faces political headwinds in the U.S. The UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has reportedly circulated these proposals, which are set to be presented to Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, during his UK visit in late May.

Anthropic’s announcement also follows OpenAI’s recent decision to establish a permanent office in London, further highlighting the city’s growing importance as a hub for AI research and development.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about potential exploitation of Anthropic’s Claude AI system by malicious actors, leading to urgent discussions by the Bank of England and the UK Treasury. Talks center on “Claude Mythos Preview,” an AI model that can detect vulnerabilities across systems, with U.K. financial firms set to be briefed on potential cybersecurity risks.
