Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday announced that he has directed Iran’s foreign minister to “pursue fair and equitable negotiations” with the United States.

This move marks a significant shift in Tehran’s approach to its strained relations with Washington, following a period of heightened tensions due to Iran’s recent crackdown on protests.

Pezeshkian’s decision indicates a possible backing from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had previously dismissed the idea of negotiations, according to ABC News. The talks, if they occur, are expected to focus on nuclear issues, with Turkey playing a facilitating role in hosting the discussions.

A Bold Shift In Iran’s Diplomatic Strategy

President Pezeshkian’s announcement came after regional allies urged engagement with President Donald Trump‘s negotiation proposal.

The potential talks would initially be indirect, with the possibility of moving to direct negotiations if progress is made, according to Ali Shamkhani, a top adviser to Khamenei.

He emphasized that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons and called for “a suitable environment” for negotiations, free from threats and unreasonable expectations. However, he rejected the idea of Iran giving up uranium enrichment, a major sticking point in past discussions.

What Does This Mean For US-Iran Relations?

The United States has not yet officially acknowledged the possibility of talks, but President Trump has expressed openness to negotiations. “We have talks going on with Iran, we’ll see how it all works out,” he said, adding that any agreement would need to address Iran’s nuclear activities and regional influence.

As reported by the news outlet, the involvement of multiple regional players, including foreign ministers from Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, suggests a broader diplomatic effort to resolve tensions. However, skepticism remains, with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressing doubt about reaching a long-term solution.

The Key Players Behind Potential Negotiations

In addition to Pezeshkian and Shamkhani, U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to play a crucial role in the talks. Witkoff is currently traveling in the region and is set to meet with Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to discuss the potential negotiations with Iran.

While the outcome of these diplomatic efforts remains uncertain, the recent developments signal a potential opening for dialogue between the U.S. and Iran, a prospect that could reshape the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.
