Electronic Arts (EA) shares were down over 4.8% on Friday afternoon after initial viewership numbers for Season 2 of multiplayer battle royale shooter Apex Legends fell short of expectations.
Apex Legends Season 2 was released on Tuesday, but it has so far failed to replicate the game’s success from earlier this year. According to Twitch Tracker, the game had about 36,000 viewers on Wednesday after it hit 107,000 viewers as recently as March and had a peak this year of about 674,000 viewers in February.
The flat launch of Season 2 calls into question whether Apex Legends may become a formidable competitor to Epic Games’ Fortnite.
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said in an interview with Bloomberg that people “are making a big deal out of Twitch views,” and while viewership will ultimately matter, Season 2 has only been out a few days. He said the complaints have been on server crashes, not the content of the game itself.
